Setting sail for the future of medicine: “Walkable OR” at MS Wissenschaft

The MS Wissenschaft officially launched its nationwide tour today. As part of the “Year of Science 2026 – Medicine of the Future,” the floating science center will be traveling through Germany until September 30. On board, 6G-life presents an interactive exhibit that takes visitors directly into the operating room of tomorrow.

The festive opening on Thursday morning marked the official start of a journey designed to make cutting-edge research accessible to the public. Dorothee Bär, Federal Minister for Research, Technology, and Space, opened the exhibition alongside Walter Rosenthal, President of the German Rectors’ Conference.

Hands-on Research: The “Walkable OR”

What makes this exhibit unique is its authenticity: it is not just a fictional simulation. The application is based on a high-precision 3D scan of the actual facilities at the National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT).

Visitors have the rare opportunity to explore a space that non-medical professionals usually only enter while under anesthesia. Through a virtual reality interface, guests can:

  • Go Behind the Scenes: Walk through a digital twin of a state-of-the-art operating room and discover the technology of the future.

  • Engage in Dialogue: Virtual characters – from surgeons to anesthetists – explain their roles and how 6G and Artificial Intelligence support their daily work.

  • Get Involved: In two integrated minigames, visitors can assist the team in a gallbladder removal, experiencing firsthand how robotic arms execute movements with extreme precision.

Why 6G for Medicine?

Beyond the interactive experience lies serious high-level research. The demonstrator is the result of close collaboration between experts from TU Dresden and TU München. It combines expertise from surgery, software development, technical design, and science communication.

The mission of 6G-life is to demonstrate how ultra-reliable, low-latency communication (URLLC) can revolutionize telemedicine and robot-assisted surgery, ultimately increasing patient safety worldwide.
