Kick-Off Event for the Second Funding Phase of 6G Transfer Hubs in Berlin

Under the motto “Kick-off for 6G Transfer Hubs – A Milestone Towards 6G,” the official launch event for the second funding phase of the German 6G research initiatives recently took place in Berlin. As one of the four central transfer hubs, 6G-life was on-site to help chart the course for the future of communication technologies.

Hosted by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the event marked a pivotal turning point: the focus is increasingly shifting toward transferring excellent research into marketable innovations and strengthening Germany’s technological sovereignty.

Collaborative Mobile Robotics

A centerpiece of our presentation in Berlin was the thematic station “6G-life – Collaborative Mobile Robotics.” Here, we showcased two groundbreaking demonstrators addressing a core question of our research:

“How must future communication platforms be designed to enable humans, robots, sensors, and the cloud to work together with near-zero latency?”

Cloud computing offers immense opportunities for robotics but poses extreme challenges for networking. Outsourcing complex functions to the cloud requires ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC) – and this is exactly where 6G-life is making a decisive impact.

Collaboration as a Key to Sovereignty

The success of 6G depends heavily on cooperation. As a Transfer Hub – driven by the excellence of Technische Universität Dresden and Technische Universität München and funded by BMFTR – 6G-life works closely with its partner hubs:

  • 6G-RIC (Berlin)

  • 6GEM (NRW)

  • Open6G Hub (Kaiserslautern)

We would like to extend a special thanks to our scientific leadership, Frank Fitzek, Wolfgang Kellerer, and Holger Boche, whose vision continues to pave the way for German excellence in 6G. The 6G Research Roadmap discussed at the event emphasized that a world-class 6G ecosystem can only emerge through the synergy of research, industry, and public policy.

Outlook: Shaping the Future

With the start of the second funding phase, 6G-life is intensifying its efforts to bridge the gap between the lab and real-world application. Our mission remains clear: creating a human-centric, sustainable, and trustworthy communication network that thrives well beyond 2030.
